Looking for Sri Lanka tour itinerary in July? Heading to Sri Lanka in July is one of the best ideas you can have, especially if you’re looking to dance in rain! The month of July brings about the inter-monsoon period where although rain is a constant, you’ll simultaneously be blessed with warm, sunny days. Here are some things you can in July when you visit Sri Lanka!

1. Head to the Hills

Nuwaraeliya

Spend a minimum of 4 days exploring the verdant mountains and the endless tea estates of Sri Lanka’s hill capital. Embark on scenic train ride as it snakes through the misty mountains or ride through tea trails between vegetation and tea estates. Some of the most iconic towns to visit in the highlands are Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella. Kandy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to the fact that this was the last remaining kingdom of Sri Lanka and that a sacred tooth relic of the Buddha is believed to be held in a golden casket within the revered Sri Dalada Maligawa. Located next to the temple, is the stunning Royal Palace, with a protected nature reserve located right above the sacred site. A few hours away and you’ll find yourself in the stunning city of Nuwara Eliya – home to the famed Ceylon tea.

2. Try your hand at Surfing (Must do in Sri Lanka in July)

Surfing in Sri Lanka

Surfing in Arugam Bay during your summer break is one of the better ways to spend your holiday. Ideally, about 2-3 days on the eastern coast is enough time to relax, hone your surfing skills and test out the stunning, enticing waters of the Indian Ocean. Enroll in a surf school and by the end of the first day, you’ll be surfing those waves like a professional. If you’re planning to head towards the western coast, head over to Mirissa or Weligama Bay for your surfing lessons. Weligama Bay is most famous for beginner surfing lessons, as the waters are gentle and shallow, and the number of surf schools dotted along the bay gives you plenty of options to choose from!

3. Cultural Triangle

sigiriya

Immerse yourself in the beauty and historic charm of the island by embarking on a discovery through the Cultural Triangle. Explore the ruins of the ancient capital cities and kingdoms of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy, climb the stunning Sigiriya Rock Fortress or admire the the giant golden statue of Lord Buddha at the Dambulla Cave Temple. Plan to spend at least a whole day exploring each of these cities and their secrets. You can opt to walk, cycle or get driven around with Olanka Travels. Each of these historic sites have been classified as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO and are thus protected.

4. Sri Lanka Wildlife

The elephant and the blue whale are two of the primary reasons tourists flock to the island time and time again. The waters around the island are known to be the perfect living conditions for the world’s biggest animal, while the rugged forests are home to herds of elephants. The Minneriya National Park is particularly famous for The Gathering; the largest congregation of wild elephants in one area, while Yala National Park is known to have the highest population of leopards in the wild, and one of the best places for leopard watching on the island. Other popular wildlife reserves to head to are Kaudulla National Park, Udawalawe National Park, Wilpattu National Park to name a few! To spot blue whales and several other types of whale species like sperm whales and Bryde whales, head over to the golden coast of Mirissa or Trincomalee.

During your whale watching expedition, you’ll find pods of playful dolphins swimming alongside your yacht! The best time for whale watching in Mirissa is between the months of December to April, while the perfect time for whale watching in Trincomalee is from March to April and later again from August to September.

5. City Life

Colombo

Embrace Colombo’s vibrant city life before you head back home. A day or two exploring the city’s charms, partaking in some retail therapy or a spa treatment is the only way to end your holiday on the island. With high end malls, scrumptious restaurants and a number of rooftop bars to grab a drink and watch the sunset, there are a number of things to do in Colombo during your vacation.
