Amongst so many other reasons, the gorgeous white beaches that surrounds the island, the beautiful gardens filled with exotic flowers and endangered plants, the famous wildlife and its historical and architectural background has paved the way for it to become one of the major tourist attractions of the world.

Olanka Travels will provide you with a tour guide who will be there with you while you are in Sri Lanka. The guide will pick you up from the Bandaranayke International Airport and escort you to all the destinations, being not only your tour guide but also the chauffer, translator and most importantly your friend throughout the stay.

Day 1 and 2 – Kandy

Kandy, the perfect kick start to a vacation in February. This is situated in the central province of Sri Lanka and is only a few hours’ drive from the airport. After we reach Kandy we will help you to check-in and give you some freedom to relax before embarking upon the vacation. Later in the evening you can explore the city with the help of our tour guide and also take a walk around the Kandy Lake enjoying the breezy wind and the beautiful surroundings.

On the next day we will take you to visit one of the world heritage sites, the temple of the tooth relic. The Devon falls is a famous waterfall that the travellers never forget to stop by while visiting Nuwaraeliya. If you visit the Mlesna Tea Centre you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Devon falls while sipping a hot cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea.

Day 4 and 5 – Dambulla

We will spend the next two days in Dambulla, a historical site of Sri Lanka. We have included Dambulla in this ten day tour package to show you the rich culture of the island and also to spice up the tour with a little adventure.

After checking into the hotel we will take you to Sigiriya, a rock fortress that was once a palace of a king who ruled Dambulla. After killing his father, King Kashyapa built this fortress kingdom to protect himself from his own brother, Moggalan. There is an interesting story behind this history and our guide will explain it to you while you are in this rock fortress.

Sigiriya is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning and also the ancient architecture is best illustrated in this majestic piece of history. The climb on top of Sigiriya will be both exciting and adventurous, and as you reach the top you will be left amazed with the view and the remains of the palace on the top. Apart from the breath-taking water gardens and the remains of the once proudly stood palace, you will also be amazed with the Sigiriya frescos of more than 500 beautiful ladies and the mirror wall where you will find poetry written across the walls. You can also visit the Sigiriya museum which will give you an insight in to the cultural and historical importance of Sigiriya.

Later in the evening we will take you out on a walk in the village and for a dinner in a local restaurant serving the best of a Sri Lankan meal.

On the fifth day of the tour we will take you on another hike to a rock that is situated in close proximity to Sigiriya, Pidurangala. This too has its cultural and historical importance as it was the home for a Buddhist temple during the time of King Kashyapa. Even though the climb will leave you a little out of breath, the view will worth be worth it. You will be able to witness a wonderful scenery all around the city of Dambulla including a marvellous sight of Sigiriya itself.

Day 6 – Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is considered as a world heritage site by the UNESCO and is the centre of the historical sites of Sri Lanka. Apart from its historical importance, Anuradhapura is also famous for its religious places of visit. The majority of the citizens of Sri Lanka are Buddhists and Anuradhapura is a city of temples and monuments where the devotees pay respect to throughout the year. Once you are in the “Pooja Nagaraya” or the city of the places of worship, you will see hundreds of devotees dressed up in white swarming in to these temples.

After paying respect to the Ruwanweli Seya and the Sri Maha Bodhi we will take you to visit the ruins of the ancient palaces, temples, rumbling old stone ponds and much more. Days 7 – Yaala

Rich Culture

The rich culture of the island is one of the reasons why the tourists from all over the world visit this beautiful and magical place. There is an interesting history behind building this magnificent piece of work. Sigiriya once stood as a proud rock fortress and a palace of the royals. This rock fortress was built by a prince to protect himself from his own brother given a conflict as to the throne. World Heritage

The Climb

Planning a Kandy city one day tour? The sacred city of Kandy, located in the lush hill country of Sri Lanka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and should not be missed during your tour of the island. If you’re heading to Kandy for a day, here’s a quick guide on what to expect in the city.

History

The city of Kandy was the last kingdom of Sri Lanka and was the capital city in 1592. The last ruling dynasty were known as the Nayaks of Kandy, who ruled until the invasion of the British in 1815. Subsequently, Kandy became the final home to the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha owing to the age old tradition that the royal family would be the protectors of the relic. Anyone fit to rule the land was seen fit to protect the sacred tooth relic. Kandy forms part of the Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and is a popular tourist destination.

Getting there

Kandy is approximately 3 hours away from the commercial capital Colombo, by car. Although you can reach Kandy by train or bus, these methods of transport are often time consuming and if you’re planning to spend a day exploring the rich charms of the city, then travelling by car is the best option available!

Sri Dalada Maligawa

The Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of the most revered temples on the island. Buddhists from around the country and the world pay a visit to the beautifully structure, pristine, white temple and its expansive premises in order to get a glimpse of the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha, believed to be enclosed in a golden box for safekeeping. The temple is surrounded by a large wall made of white stone that dates back to the 19th century. On the far end of the temple’s premises, you’ll find the Royal Palace. Each year, the sacred tooth is paraded around the streets of the city in a grand ceremony known as the Esala Perahera, which is often held during the months of July or August. The parade consists of fire dancers, traditional dancers from around the island, heavily adorned elephants and numerous other figures, each with their own significance to the cultural parade.

Home to numerous avi fauna, reptiles and mammals, the forest reserve offers a cool, quiet escape from the bustling city below. Once inside, it’s almost impossible to believe that the city thrives below, as the only sounds you hear are that of animals and insects! It was declared a forest reserve in 1856 and a sanctuary in 1938. The forest reserve is approximately 20 minutes from the Temple of the Tooth.

The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya is located approximately 5km from the city. Known to be the largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka, the 147 acres of lush foliage and well manicured lawns is home to over 4000 plant species. According to legend, it was used by the Royal Family as their private garden. The Royal Botanical Gardens is most famed for housing a colourful, vibrant collection of orchids.
